WEEK 9: The Fighting Cholitas
Posted by: feedwordpress
While watching The Fighting Cholitas I loved how there were many different women in the first part of the video being introduced and how they identify as; more so as well what this means to them. I found it interesting that the Cholitas were characterizing themselves as being old fashioned and people perhaps judging them […] read full post >>

The Fighting Cholitas

I loved watching this video! The physical strength, confidence, and grit of these women is very cool. Something that I found to be beautiful is how the cholita wrestlers find so much purpose and strength in what they do. Many of them speak about how empowering being in the ring is. Marta la Alteña (Jenny) …

Both the short documentary and the reading we had for this week asked the question of why do people enjoy watching and participating in fights, and something I found intriguing was the idea of catharsis: “In a city of more than twenty-two million inhabitants, marked by insecurity and violence, lucha libre may serve as a […] read full post >>
Mariam Jobrani’s “Fighting Cholitas”

Watching Mariam Jobrani’s Fighting Cholitas, I noticed how one of the women described feeling special, and like una estrella, or “a star”, while in the ring (05:15). Up until then, I had been wondering if lucha libre among Cholitas in Bolivia is one means of empowerment for these women, who earlier in the film areContinue reading "Mariam Jobrani’s “Fighting Cholitas”" read full post >>

This movie was so interesting! Specifically, I loved the many connections it has with feminist ideas. At the beginning of the film, we can see the Cholitas daily lives of selling things, going to the market, and walking around the city dressed in their traditional ways, reflecting the Indigenous and ‘mestizos’ cultural way of dressing.Continuar lendo "Sports: The Fighting Cholitas" read full post >>
Week 9: The Fighting Cholitas

The clip about the fighting Cholitas was quite a refreshing view on what I understood as a mostly male-dominated sport, as the image that comes to mind when I think of wrestling are usually the very commercial WWE events with mostly men performing, while media depictions of wrestling in the Latin American context are those …

In this week’s readings, I was amazed by how culturally significant clothing and appearances are not only in lucha libre but also in everyday life. It’s so interesting to see and understand the stories behind such cultural items, namely the mask used in Mexican wrestling. The significance of the masks is explored in the sectionsContinue reading "Week 9: Wrestling" read full post >>
Week 9: Wrestling LAST 201

The Fighting Cholitas This documentary showcased a unique community of Bolivian Lucha Libre fighters. The fighters are Indigenous women wearing big traditional skirts, scarves, and their hair in braids. Bolivian women who present like this are known as “cholitas”. This was really the opposite of what I associate with Lucha Libre (although to be honestContinue reading "Week 9: Wrestling LAST 201" read full post >>
Week 9: The Fighting Cholitas (2006)
Posted by: feedwordpress
This week, I chose to write about the mini-documentary “The Fighting Cholitas” (2006) because I was so invested in it I could not take my eyes off the screen for a second. I don’t typically watch or follow any sort of sports, particularly wrestling, so watching these clips was especially shocking. I find it absolutelyContinue reading "Week 9: The Fighting Cholitas (2006)" read full post >>
